The play area in George Street Park, Motherwell, was tired, offered limited play opportunities and access to the equipment was difficult. Local residents got together and formed the George Street Park Regeneration Group with the sole purpose of improving the park and its play opportunities.
The group worked with council officers and elected members and held public meetings to allow residents to consider the project and discuss any concerns they may have had regarding the development. The group visited schools to carry out play workshops with pupils who then had the opportunity to choose what equipment the new play area might include.
The Council Play Services applied for funding in late 2020 and were awarded funding in March 2021. However due to the pandemic and lockdowns, the tendering process and project delivery were severely delayed. Work finally got underway on site in early 2022 with the project completing in late spring.
The new play area incorporates play elements designed for a range of children, from toddlers to young teens, encourages all ability access and features to promote inclusive play and inter-generational activities for all. The new area includes wheelchair friendly roundabout, accessible swings, and cable runway.
The new play area was officially opened in June 2022 with a celebration event organised by the local community.
