Scaffolding helps Ilkeston United Reform Church reach new heights!
Many church buildings receive a detailed inspection every five years and Ilkeston’s United Reformed Church, known locally as the 'Green Spire Church' went from having a virtually clean bill of health in 2011 to ‘oops you’ve got problems’ in 2016 and ‘we think it will cost this much to put it right’ (ouch).
But it’s happening! With financial help from FCC Communities Foundation (£27,638.36), the Garfield Weston Trust (£7500), the Congregational and General Charitable Trust (£13500) and a generous donation from Samworth Brothers, the scaffolding has gone up and the most critical ‘keep the weather out’ work is underway.
Church member Roger Allen said that ‘You look at the potential cost (£90K) and you think ‘How on earth are we going to raise that?’ But with generous help from Grant Funders and Charitable trusts including FCC Communities Foundation and the people who use the building, we’ve got there. We are extremely pleased that work has begun!'
