Village Hall Restoration Nears Completion Thanks to FCC Communities Foundation Funding

Major refurbishment project is breathing new life into St Bees Village Hall, preserving a cherished community asset for future generations

A major renovation and refurbishment project at St Bees Village Hall is approaching completion, with significant progress made on restoring and improving the historic community building thanks to funding from FCC Communities Foundation.

The village hall was awarded £36,577.56 in funding in December 2025 as part of a programme of works designed to improve the condition and longevity of the much-loved facility.

Since work began, several key elements of the restoration have been completed, including the varnishing of repaired windows, extensive repointing of the building's sandstone frontage and the first phase of plastering work following the removal of old plaster.

The project has required skilled craftsmanship, particularly in the repointing of the historic sandstone structure. Work has also uncovered previously hidden issues, including rotten roof rafters that must be replaced before some internal plastering can be completed. These repairs will be covered through the project's contingency funding.

The final stages of the project will include further stone repairs, completion of plastering work in the upstairs committee room and around the windows, and repairs and plastering in the stairwell area.

A recent visit by local MP Josh MacAlister provided an opportunity to showcase the progress made so far. The MP joined representatives from the village hall, parish council and the stonemasons carrying out the restoration work to see first-hand how the project is helping to safeguard an important community asset.

With the scaffolding due to come down soon, residents will soon be able to see the completed restoration work in full and enjoy the benefits of a revitalised village hall that continues to serve the community for generations to come.
