New Community Sports Facility Funded in Ayrshire

West Kilbride Community Sports Club is celebrating the opening of a new sports pavilion in West Kilbride Glen after a comprehensive £150,000 refurbishment and reconfiguration.

The excellent new facility is officially open after a launch event attended by local Councillor Todd Ferguson.

The project represents Phase 2 of a strategic plan by the Community Sports Club to upgrade sports facilities in the village following completion of the adjoining tennis courts in 2016.

When costs came in substantially over budget following the tender stage at the end of last year it had looked like the whole project may have to be abandoned. After two years of work including raising substantial funding the project team were understandably very reluctant to give up. The solution came in the form of a non-standard and riskier procurement route as the only way to achieve delivery within the available budget which was eventually achieved.

The new pavilion provides modernised and enlarged changing rooms, showers and a clubroom for football and other field sports users as well as a new clubhouse for tennis. FCC Communities Foundation was the main funder with significant contributions also provided by North Ayrshire Ventures Trust, West Kilbride Community Trust and the May Lockhart Trust as well as a number of generous local donors.

West Kilbride Community Sports club Chairman John Wilson says “This was a particularly difficult project to deliver at every stage but it is gratifying that a combination of determination, teamwork and creativity finally got us over the line. The new pavilion is a massive improvement on its 50 year old dilapidated predecessor and a terrific addition to the village’s sports infrastructure. Both the football facilities and the new tennis clubhouse are among the best of their kind in Ayrshire and should support sport in West Kilbride for many years to come. We are hugely grateful to all our funders for their help in making this possible.”
