Revitalised Track Helps Whitehaven Get Active Together

26/05/2026

Cumbria Sports Academy is delighted to announce that the major upgrade of the Whitehaven Athletics Track has now been completed, marking an exciting new chapter for athletics in West Cumbria.

The revitalised facility is as good as new, following a comprehensive programme of cleaning, repairs and full re‑spraying of the track surface, including all lane and event markings. An application has now been submitted for UK Athletics TrackMark accreditation, paving the way for official competitions to return to Whitehaven.

Once approved, the accreditation will allow Seaton Harriers and Copeland Athletics Club to host future home fixtures locally — removing the need for athletes, coaches and families to travel to Carlisle.

The project was made possible thanks to funding from FCC Communities Foundation and the Landfill Communities Fund, representing a significant investment in grassroots sport and community wellbeing.

The upgraded track will support athletics training, coaching and competition across all ages and abilities, ensuring the facility continues to serve local clubs, schools and the wider community for many years to come.

Cheryl Raynor from FCC Communities Foundation said:

“We’re proud to support the revitalisation of the Whitehaven Athletics Track, a facility that means a great deal to the local community. By improving this space, the project helps bring people together, encourages participation in sport for all ages, and provides a safe, welcoming place for residents to stay active and connected. It’s wonderful to see funding making a real difference to everyday community life.”

Paul Holiday, Chairman of Cumbria Athletics, said:

“This is fantastic news for athletics in West Cumbria. Having a fully refurbished, competition‑ready track means local clubs can once again host events on their doorstep. It’s a huge boost for athletes, volunteers and the future development of the sport in the area.”

Cumbria Sports Academy would like to thank all partners involved in delivering this project and looks forward to welcoming athletes and the local community back to the track very soon!
