Work Begins on Village Hall Extension Despite Early Challenges
30/04/2026
Exciting progress is underway on the long-awaited extension to the village hall, with construction officially beginning on 17 March. The project marks a significant investment in the community’s facilities, aiming to create a warmer, more energy-efficient and welcoming space for local residents.
Work got off to a strong start with the breaking of ground, but the team soon encountered an unexpected challenge. Just days into construction, a disused well was discovered directly in the path of the new foundations. While the find initially slowed progress, it was quickly assessed, and importantly, archaeological investigations confirmed there was nothing of historical significance that would delay the project.
The well, which had been functioning as a soakaway for several surface water drains, required a change in plans. A new soakaway solution had to be designed and installed, resulting in a short delay and the use of some contingency funds. However, project leaders remain positive that this was a one-off issue.
Working closely with neighbouring properties, the project team also carried out further checks to ensure there were no hidden legal or historical complications, such as rights of access to the well. Thanks to the cooperation of local residents, no additional concerns were identified.
Now, just a few weeks on, the well has been safely backfilled and foundations are in place. Construction is gathering pace, and the building is expected to be up and watertight imminently, giving a first glimpse of how the completed extension will look from the outside.
As the project moves forward into the summer months, attention will turn to the interior. Planned improvements include modern heating and air conditioning systems and upgraded lighting, all designed to improve comfort while reducing energy use and running costs.
Cheryl Raynor, FCC Communities Foundation Grant Manager said:
“FCC Communities Foundation is absolutely delighted to be supporting this fantastic project. The village hall plays such an important role at the heart of the community, and these improvements will create a warmer, greener and more welcoming space for everyone to enjoy for years to come.”
When complete, the enhanced village hall will be drier, warmer and more environmentally friendly, providing a much-improved space for community activities. The project remains on track for completion in July, with residents able to look forward to enjoying the upgraded facilities later this year.
