Critical Conservation for Corncrakes on Oronsay

The RSPB are delighted to have been successful with a recent application for funding towards Corncrake conservation work on the island of Oronsay from FCC Communities Foundation.

As one of the UK’s rarest birds, protecting their habitats across their stronghold in the Inner Hebridean islands is vital to support local populations.

Funding will allow the installation of new fencing to increase Corncrake-friendly habitat - tall grasses like Nettles and Irises - by one hectare, and to fence off a nearby stream to prevent cattle trampling vegetation and contaminating the water (pictured below).

Two solar-powered pumps and troughs will ensure livestock can still access water and continue their vital role in managing vegetation for a range of other coastal wildlife.
